How it works

We’re creating a secure end-to-end system for digital content provenance with open-source tools and a cross-industry community of adopters. Our work is fully compliant with the technical specifications released in 2022 by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) or C2PA Content Credentials.

Content Credentials help you record and display the most important details about a piece of content at every step of its lifecycle.

How it works

This information is tamper-evident, persistent across editing iterations, and accessible to anyone, bringing a previously unattainable level of transparency to the digital content consumption experience.

Creation

The CAI’s free open-source tools support a broad and expanding range of content creation tools, from generative AI to digital photography to digital art and more. Each asset is cryptographically hashed and signed to capture a verifiable, tamper-evident record that enables exposure of any changes to the asset or its metadata. Creators can choose to attach attribution information and usage signals directly to their assets. Privacy and security are of the utmost consideration in our work.

Leica released the M11-P camera — the world’s first camera with Content Credentials built in. This was a milestone, introducing a powerful new way for photojournalists and creatives to combat misinformation and bring authenticity to their work at the point of creation.

Nikon is bringing Content Credentials to future camera models, starting with its Z 9 series. Nikon is also collaborating with Agence France-Presse to support authenticity and reliability in photojournalism and the fact-checking process.

The ProofMode camera app enables anyone to capture photos and videos with Content Credentials embedded at the source. ProofMode taps into enhanced device sensor metadata, hardware fingerprinting, cryptographic signing, and third-party notaries to provide interoperable provenance.

Provenance technology is coming to smartphones with Content Credentials embedded at the chip level. Supporting photo authenticity for consumers and their devices, the Qualcomm Snapdragon8 Gen3 platform camera system works with Truepic to support Content Credentials that ensure authenticity of photos and videos across smartphones.
